Chris Coons Presses for Unemployment Extension

(New Castle, DE) – In response to this morning’s news that the national economy lost another 125,000 jobs in June, New Castle County Executive and Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Chris Coons issued the following statement:

“Today’s news that another 125,000 working men and women lost their jobs last month – their way to pay their household bills – reminds all of us that we need leaders in Washington committed to creating and protecting good paying, permanent jobs.  Yesterday’s news that Sallie Mae will be relocating its corporate headquarters to Delaware proves that when government, businesses, and our broader community come together, we can turn this tide.  We need more help from Washington – help for small businesses, manufacturing, and innovation-based businesses – if we are to help businesses to create more jobs in Delaware and beyond over the long term.

Most disturbing are the reports that more than 600,000 Americans simply stopped looking for work last month.  While Senators and members of Congress spend next week at home, marking our national holiday with family and friends, 1.7 million residents will struggle to keep a roof over their heads and food on their family tables.  It’s time for Washington to wake up, end the partisan games over unemployment, and extend unemployment insurance to the growing numbers of Americans now out of work.”
